Refurbishing Three CIP Skid Systems Without Disrupting Production: A Biopharma Case Study

Flow Technology refurbished three CIP skid systems at an Irish biopharma facility, within a 3-week shutdown window, on time, and to full safety compliance.

Process equipment doesn’t last forever and after years of continuous service, three CIP skid systems at an Irish biopharma site had reached the point where a full refurbishment was the right call.

The site operated one 5-tank and two 4-tank CIP skid systems. Across all three, valves and instrumentation had reached end-of-life, maintenance access had become more difficult over time as the surrounding environment changed. Refurbishment and requalification within a planned shutdown was the most efficient path forward, avoiding the disruption of full system replacement.

Flow Technology was engaged to plan and execute the full refurbishment within the shutdown window. Preparation began well ahead of the shutdown. New skid sections were designed and fabricated at our workshop, and all equipment was staged for rapid deployment on-site. When the shutdown opened, we mobilised a team of 26 craftsmen.

Obsolete valves, instruments, and equipment were replaced across all three skids. Heat exchangers were relocated onto new dedicated skid frames, improving access to components. Valve, pump, and equipment layouts reconfigured for improved maintenance accessibility. Safety and ergonomic upgrades were integrated throughout the new design

All three systems were handed back fully refurbished, tested, and operational, within the 3-week window. The site achieved meaningful savings compared to full replacement, with improved maintenance access and full safety and ergonomic compliance across all three skids.
